The Central Division authorities in Fort Portal City have today officially launched the renovation of Mugunu Washing Bay, a project spearheaded by the Natural Resources Defence Initiatives (NRDI) and aimed at promoting environmental conservation along the Mugunu riverbanks.
Central Division Mayor Richard Muhumuza, who presided over the launch, commended NRDI for supporting the city’s environmental protection efforts and urged car washers to maintain the facility once it is completed.
City Planner Sam Musana revealed that the renovation will be implemented in two phases. In the first phase, the project will include: installation of a 10,000-litre water tank; fencing off the washing area to prevent car washers from drawing water directly from the stream; construction of a standard well to pump water into the tank; and the setting up of a chain-link fence to secure the site.
He added that the second phase will involve constructing a slab and installing sanitary facilities, including toilets for users.
NRDI representative Collins Mutegeki said the project was initiated in response to increasing pollution along the Mugunu riverbanks, where car washers have been operating close to the water source, contaminating it with fuel and other waste. He noted that establishing a modern washing bay is a key step towards safeguarding the environment.
