Residents of Kyanjubu Village in Kyarusozi Town Council, Kyenjojo District, are counting heavy losses after a hailstorm struck the area yesterday.
According to one of the affected residents, Gerald Kagezi, the rainstorm, which began at around 4:00 pm, destroyed several crops including cassava gardens, sweet potatoes, tea fields, and banana plantations.
The hailstorm also severely affected livestock, killing goats and chickens, leaving many residents worried about how they will survive without food
When contacted, the LC1 Chairperson of Kyanjubu Village, Kiiza John, said efforts to seek a quick solution were made by consulting the agricultural officer. However, the officer reportedly indicated that government assistance may not be forthcoming.
The agricultural officer further revealed that a similar incident previously occurred in Kyangabukama Village within the same town council. Reports detailing the cost of the damaged property were submitted to the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness, but no response has been received to date.
Kiiza added that they were advised to appeal to their leaders and politicians for support.
He was particular that the community urgently needs seeds for replanting, as most gardens were destroyed, while residents search for other ways to recover.
Kyarusozi Town Council has also recently been affected by declining tea prices, which remain the community’s main source of income.
