In an effort to support farmers who suffered losses due to climate-related risks last season, Agro Consortium, in partnership with Yield Harvests, has compensated ten farmers from the Mpinga United Farmers group in Harugongo Sub-county, Kabarole District, under the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme.
The compensation exercise was conducted today in Mpinga Village, Harugongo Sub-countyKabarole district targeting farmers who insured their crop gardens during the previous farming season.
Speaking during the handover ceremony where each member received 270,000 shillings,Richard Businge, the manager of Yield Harvests based in Kanyambeho , Kiko Town Council, encouraged farmers to embrace crop insurance as an essential risk management tool in agricultural business especially when hit by hazards such as drought, heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and strong winds.
Recheal Nalwoga, the Business Development Officer at Agro Consortium, an organization that manages a government-subsidized program known as the Agriculture Insurance Scheme explained that they partners with agro-based organizations across the country to ensure that both small- and large-scale farmers insure their crop gardens against climate-related risks.
One of the beneficiaries, Sarah Basasa, a retired teacher who ventured into maize and sorghum farming, said she had previously suffered repeated losses without any compensation thanking the partnership between Yield Harvests and Agro Consortium for the compensation and pledged to promote the program among fellow farmers.
Meanwhile, Paul Kato, a youth farmer from the Mpinga United Farmers group, called upon fellow young people benefiting from government programs such as Emyooga to embrace crop insurance to protect them from total loss in the event of climate-related disasters.
