Residents of Kazinga town council have embarked on community work to rehabilitate the road through Rushayube swamp which has been in a sorry state, hampering movement of people and goods.
Locally known as “Burungi bwansi”, the campaign begun on Wednesday 30th July, championed by leaders in villages of Rushayumbe, Nyabutare, Omukiti Kyerisho, Kanyaiteeka and Omukishozi _all in Rushayumbe ward Kazinga town council Kyegegwa district.
According to residents led by Mr. Ninkusiima Katamanywa, the LC1 NRM flag bearer for Kanyaiteeka cell, this swamp has been impassable, despite being a major link connecting several villages in the area, hence calling for urgent action from town council authorities.
“I thank you all my residents for a good response towards the call for a campaign to rescue ourselves from hardships by impassable roads in our community, then you never know, our leaders will come in, but let them continue from where we have tried and failed, not where we have not even tried anything”. Said Mr Katamanywa.
These hail the aspiring mayor for Kazinga town council, Amos Kijunjuure, who was the lead organiser of the community work. They vowed to mobilise support for him in the forthcoming election, urging him to continue supporting well-being of community members.
Mr Amos Kijunjuure, who is also a resident of the area, revealed how poor state of the bridge have affected residents, especially farmers who need to transport their products to the marked. He says that through community work, they can also reduce on risk of people losing their lives due to flooding that usually occur in wet seasons.
“This area is prone to water overflow when rains come, but when we join hands, we can save lives of people who are at a risk of losing lives; especially pregnant mothers who would opt to use this way going to hospitals”. Said Mr Kijunjuure.
In August Last year, one woman, a wife to Pastor Tibeingana, resident of Rushayumbe cell, lost her life during childbirth at Kazinga Health Centre 111 in Kazinga town council. Her death was attributed to delayed medical attention, which was ideally due to late reporting at the facility.
According to residents, Pastor Tibeingana tried to call boda boda riders as soon as his wife started experiencing labour pains, but there was hesitation due to poor state of Rushayube swamp which was the only way. The woman was pronounced dead after giving birth.
