Kyegegwa: Couple left homeless after suspected arson destroys property

Rodgers Tumwebaze, 30, and his wife Maureen Twinomujuni are residents of Mpara B in Mpara Town Council, Kyegegwa District.

In an interview with our reporter on Tuesday morning, 19 August, at his residence, Tumwebaze recounted that the tear-jerking incident occurred at around 8:00 pm on Monday, 18 August, while the couple was away at Nyarubaru Trading Centre, where they operate small businesses—a pork joint and a bar. They were alerted to the incident by their neighbours.

Tumwebaze and his wife Maureen Twinomujuni are currently seeking justice, emphasising that they hold no grudges against anyone in the village.

Godffery Muhangi, the L.C.I. Chairperson of Mpara B, joined by Pastor Adriane Kyambade, a fellow resident, condemned the anti-social behaviour in the area. They confirmed to our reporter that one person suspected to be behind the acts, identified as Godwin Tumwine, a mechanic, has been arrested following a thorough search by locals with officers from Mpara Police Station. The suspect is currently in police custody.

Meanwhile, John Byabasaija, the Mayor of Mpara Town Council in Kyegegwa District, condemned the criminal act and emphasised that Uganda is not a state of lawlessness, warning residents to remain vigilant and avoid becoming victims.
