The Mpara Town Council councillors in Kyegegwa District have anonymously approved the creation of Mpara District, carved out from the parent district of Kyegegwa.
The motion, moved by the Secretary for Community-Based Services at Mpara Town Council and councillor representing Bugido Ward, Begumya Fred, was approved on Friday, 3rd October, during an extraordinary council sitting chaired by the Town Council Speaker, Bunihizi Aheehwa Josephat.
The councillors stated that the creation of Mpara District is expected to bring numerous opportunities, including job creation, the upgrading of Mpara Health Centre IV to district general hospital status, and improved infrastructure development, among others.
During a Committee of the Whole Council session, other stakeholders—mainly the Chairperson of the Women’s League, Kyegegwa District, Annah Kahwa, and the District Deputy Speaker, Kyegegwa, Eve Tumuhairwe, who also doubles as the councillor representing Mpara Town Council at the district, among others—endorsed the creation of Mpara District.
John Byabasaija, the Mayor of Mpara Town Council, also emphasised that the creation of Mpara District will help bring better services closer to the people.
He confirmed that the council further approved the creation of nine new wards, in addition to the current five: Mpara Ward, Musanja, Kishambya, Bugido, and Nsonda Itaano Ward.
The newly approved wards are Kyamabare, Kyabulikarara, Kyegaike, Kyakikoyo, and Kijiibi.
Others include Bahura, Kijunju, Nyakatoke, and Milomunana.
In related news, other sub-county councils—Ruyonza, Rwentuha, Mpara Sub-county, Migamba, and Kazinga Town Council—also approved the same motion during their extraordinary council meetings held on 3rd October 2025.
The development comes amid NRM mobilisation tours conducted late last month in September by the area MP for Kyaka South, who is also the Deputy Attorney General of Uganda, Minister Jackson Kafuuzi Karugaba. He told his supporters that he is at the forefront of ensuring the creation of Mpara District, which is expected to become operational in 2031.
