Ruyonza Sub county councillors in Kyegegwa District have eulogised the late Sulaiman Kanuuma Nyakanya, Speaker of Ruyonza Sub county, for his dedicated service, describing him as a staunch NRM supporter and an incorruptible leader.
The councillors, who spoke individually, made their remarks on Tuesday, 7 October, during an extraordinary council sitting held to pay tribute to the late Speaker.
The special council sitting was chaired by the Deputy Speaker of Ruyonza Sub-county, Hon. Alex Kanchiriho.
The sitting took place at Mpara Mosque, located in Mpara Central Cell, Mpara Town Council, Kyegegwa District. It attracted hundreds of attendees, including friends of the late Sulaiman Nyakanya, Ruyonza Sub-county technical staff, and other community members.
Led by Tarasisi Rwobuzizi, the LC3 Chairperson of Ruyonza, the councillors described the late Nyakanya as a leader who effectively managed the council by paying close attention to time management.
Speaking to the mourners, John Kisoke Byamukama the district chairperson Kyegegwa, also paid his tribute to the grieved family described the deceased as one who has been sticking on his idea and a great Muslim pillar.
During their speeches, various Muslim leaders, including the District Khateeb of Kyegegwa, Sheikh Muhammad Yunusu Kibuka, and the Chairperson of the Muslim Supreme Council, as well as the District Education Officer of Kyegegwa, Mwesige Hussein, lauded the deceased for his tremendous efforts in promoting the Islamic faith in the area.
Speaking as the chief mourner, Minister Jackson Kafuuzi Karugaba, the area MP for Kyaka South, urged the community to uphold the principles of humanity and condemned divisive politics in the area.
The late Sulaiman Nyakana, who served as Speaker of Ruyonza Sub-county for nearly 10 years, succumbed to a pulmonary embolism at the age of 74 at Mulago Hospital on 6 October 2025. He is survived by 45 biological children, five wives, and over 180 grandchildren. He was laid to rest on Tuesday, 7 October 2025.
