Aziza Matovu Asiimwe, who had recently developed an idea to contest in the 2026 Parliamentary elections for Kyegegwa district on an independent ticket, has rescinded her move.
Aziza declared the withdrawal of her candidature on the evening of Tuesday, October 21, while addressing her subcounty coordinators in a meeting held at Amac Suites in Kyegegwa town council.
However, before the official declaration was made, some of Aziza’s supporters who were unaware of what was about to transpire were quietly overheard discussing strategies to defeat their opponents.
While addressing her supporters, Aziza noted that her decision was a result of increased pressure from certain organisations, especially within the NRM party, citing the “Museveni Back Mission 2026,” Abazukulu (Grandchildren) Uganda, and the NRM Cadres group, of which she is a member.
Aziza emphasised that one does not necessarily need to hold a leadership position in order to create impact. She added that she now plans to focus on strengthening her community work in preparation for the 2031 general elections.
She further pledged to establish the Aziza Development Foundation, which will primarily empower youth, women, and older persons.
Mwesigwa Ragibu, the district coordinator for Hon. Aziza, appealed to their supporters not to be disheartened by her decision. He, however, noted that several social and economic challenges had posed obstacles to their victory.
During the meeting, while some of Aziza’s supporters welcomed her decision, others remained silent throughout an action perceived by many as a sign of disappointment or betrayal. The meeting came just a day before the official Electoral Commission Parliamentary nominations scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, October 22 and 23, 2025, respectively.
Aziza Matovu is a teacher by profession and resides in Nkomangani, Kyatega subcounty, Kyegegwa district.
