The beneficiaries of the Emyooga programme in Kyegegwa District have given live testimony, saying it has transformed their lives and created jobs.

The Emyooga programme in Uganda is a presidential initiative launched in 2019 to create jobs and boost household incomes by transforming households from subsistence farming to market-oriented production.

During the launch of the Kyegegwa District Emyooga Missionaries Team for the Tooro Region, held on Saturday, 22 November, at Humura Primary School playground in Kyegegwa Town Council, various Emyooga SACCO beneficiaries shared their experiences.

Nakyeyune Christine from Kyaka North, a salon operator under the Emyooga SACCO, testified that she borrowed UGX 700,000 in the first phase during the 2020/2021 financial year, which boosted her business and is now generating profits.

Stella Marish Kyosimiire, from the Emyooga Produce Dealers SACCO, said she used the programme to purchase a full plot of land, construct a rental house, and set up a shop. She praised H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for the initiative.

Robert Mugisa, the District Commercial Officer for Kyegegwa and the programme’s focal person, said that since the programme began in 2019, 12,990 people have benefited, UGX 932 million has been saved, and 1,562 jobs have been created.

He also revealed that, on average, loan recovery across the district stands at 75%.

John Kisoke Byamukama, the District Chairperson of Kyegegwa, emphasised the need for all stakeholders in the district to publicise government programmes and services, especially during this political season.

In his address to the gathering, Minister Jackson Kafuuzi Karugaba, the chief guest, expressed his concern after discovering that some Emyooga SACCO members were not genuine. He warned that they could be misappropriating government funds, thereby denying the opportunity to those who could genuinely benefit from the programme.
