Electoral Commission supervisor for Nkanja Sub county in Kyegegwa District, Benard Kasangaki, was arrested on Thursday, 5 February, by Kyegegwa Central Police Station over allegations of altering election results for the position of Woman Councillor representing Kyaburikuya Parish in Nkanja Sub county.

During the local council elections held on 4 February 2026, the position attracted only two candidates: Mbabazi Denavensi of NRM and Kemigisha Mildred, an independent.

Based on the declaration forms seen by our reporter on Thursday, 5 February, the parish has six polling stations. At Kyaburikuya polling station, Kemigisha Mildred received 84 votes, while her opponent Mbabazi Denavensi polled 54 votes.

The situation escalated when Benard Kasangaki, the EC supervisor for Nkanja Sub-county, presented the results to be entered into the system at the district headquarters, designated as the EC tally centre. He announced that Kemigisha Mildred had received 130 votes—an addition of 46 votes—which angered supporters of Mbabazi Denavensi. The unrest was led by the district councillor representing Nkanja and Kyegegwa sub-counties, Hon. Ahaisibwe Alliverah.

The tally room quickly descended into chaos, with angry supporters physically assaulting Kasangaki. Police intervened immediately, rescuing him and restoring order after several minutes of panic.

The pressure continued to mount among supporters of Mbabazi Denavensi, prompting the intervention of the DPC Kyegegwa, Superintendent of Police Christine Atayi, the NRM District Chairperson, Lieutenant Willison Byaboona, and other senior district officials.

During a brief interaction between the DPC and Nicholas Asiimwe, the District Election Administrator for Kyegegwa, it was agreed that a re-count at Kyaburikuya polling station be conducted. The fact-finding exercise confirmed that Kemigisha Mildred, an independent candidate, garnered 84 votes, while her opponent, Mbabazi Denavensi of NRM, polled 54 votes.
