Kyegegwa: Village Chairperson perish in a road accident, authorities push for his succession

Katushabe John popularly known as Emanzi the chairperson for Kishagazi East cell, along with Dr. Dickson Kamugisha, a veterinary officer and resident of Kishagazi East village, both in Ruyonza Sub County, were involved in a fatal accident en route to Kyegegwa from Kyenjojo town.

Hundreds of mourners on Wednesday gathered in Kishagazi West LC1 in Ruyonza Sub County to pay last tribute to their village chairperson who perished in an accident on Monday March 16.

Katushabe John popularly known as Emanzi the village chairperson, along with Dr. Dickson Kamugisha, a veterinary officer and resident of Kishagazi East in Kishagazi Parish Ruyonza sub county, were involved in a fatal accident at Kiruma cell, along Kyegegwa -Kyenjojo road while returning from Kyenjojo town.

Both Katushabe and Kamugisha died on the spot following the incident, in which a lorry that was also en route to Kyenjojo, reportedly suffered a tire bust, and rammed into the victims who were traveling on a bodaboda.

According to reports, a bodaboda rider who was transporting the deceased was admitted to the nearest clinic after suffering severe injuries.

Mushabe Bylon Mabondo the district councilor for Ruyonza sub county praised the late chairperson as a committed leader who served with integrity during his time as the village boss.

Leading the mass at the sendoff, Rev. Fr. Byamukama Robert Apuuli of Mpala catholic parish urged Christians to stay prepared for death, for it doesn’t alert anyone.

Tarasisi Rwobuziizi the Sub County Chairperson for Ruyonza called for cooperation amongst leaders, and urged residents to remain calm as the government procedures are ongoing, about his succession.

He noted that apparently, the vice chairperson will take over the village leadership in acting capacity until a new successor is appointed.

Born on 26-03-1962, Katushabe John Emanzi was elected the village chairperson in 1980’s, the seat he carried until his death. During last year’s National Resistance Movement party elections for local council one chairperson flag bearers, Katushabe John went through unopposed.

He has also been the LC2 secretary for Kijongobya greater, and later Kishagazi Parish, and the board member at Kishagazi community primary school. At 64, Katushabe has survived with 9 children and 9 grandchildren.

Both him and Dickson Kamugisha were laid to rest yesterday Wednesday, 18th March, 2026, in their respective homes.
