At least 121 dogs in Kalongo Town council have been vaccinated against rabies in the last six
weeks. This development was confirmed by Walter Akena, the district veterinary officer.
Speaking to Qfm news desk over the weekend, Akena confirmed that their records shows that
there are at least 221 dogs within kalongo town council and now 121 have been vaccinated
while 31 stray dogs have also been killed
Akena said they were prompted to carry out this mass vaccination of dogs because of
community concern about the stray dogs and the potential risk of rabies springing up in the
local communities
According to the veterinary officer, the Rabies Act of 1935 [cap44] provides for control of
straying dogs.
Robert Kinyera, a resident of Kalongo town council has meanwhile appealed to fellow residents
to always vaccinate their dogs to protect the community from diseases such as rabies that
result from dog bites
According to The Center For Disease Control, Rabies is a preventable viral disease most often
transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. The rabies virus infects the central nervous
system of mammals, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death. The vast majority of
rabies cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) each year occur
in wild animals like bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes, although any mammal can get rabies.
