Government-aided primary schools in Dokolo District have recorded a low turnout of learners as teachers resume work following the recent industrial action.

According to the Acting District Inspector of Schools, Tonny Lameck Ereco, this development was observed on the first day of reopening after the industrial action. He revealed this to our reporter on Monday afternoon from his office at the district headquarters.

Ereco noted that most government schools recorded a low number of learners, which may negatively impact academic performance.

He cited examples such as Angwecibange Primary School with 470 out of 1,590 pupils, Dokolo Primary School with 355 out of 1,000, Apewotneki Primary School with 218, Amatiburu Primary School with 163, and Ilong Primary School with 279 out of 751 pupils, among others.

He appealed to parents to send their children back to school with all the necessary scholastic materials to support learning.

Chief Administrative Officer Granfil Oryondo Omonda urged teachers to resume intensive teaching to improve learners’ performance. He also called on parents to release their children from domestic work and ensure they return to school.

The Chairperson of the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) Dokolo Branch, Joseph Omiat, appealed to teachers to resume lessons as negotiations between the union and government continue.

The Headteacher of Angwecibange Primary School, Catharine Docus Ayuru, said they have registered only 50 per cent of the school’s total enrolment.
