Commissioner Proscovia Ayoo Otyek, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner for Lira district, has urged learners not to let financial constraints stand in the way of their education and future. Speaking at the dedication prayer for P7 pupils of Wigweng Primary School in Agweng subcounty, Ayoo emphasised that the government, under the leadership of President Gen. Yoweri Museveni, has established alternative mechanisms for skilling youth with market-driven practices and employable skills adding that this is strategic move by the mighty NRM party to ensure that no child is left behind.
Alternative pathways to success
Ayoo highlighted the skilling hub at Lira University, which offers free training in carpentry, metal work and fabrication, shoe-making, and other leather products. “I am happy to inform you that President Museveni, in his own wisdom and passion for youth employment, has created and established many skilling hubs,” Ayoo said. “Here in Lango, we have one at Lira University where our youth can get skilled.” She encouraged vulnerable children from needy families to take advantage of this opportunity.
Addressing dropout rates
The call comes amid concerns over high dropout rates, particularly among girls, and challenges students face in transitioning to secondary school due to financial constraints. Jenifer Acio, the headteacher of Wigweng Primary School, expressed her concerns about the issue.
Community support for education
Acio also praised parents for their collaborative relationship with the school and teachers. She noted that the Wigweng community has shown commitment to supporting education, unlike some districts where parents have resorted to destructive actions during teacher strikes. Recently, parents and teachers negotiated for the P7 class to continue studying and teaching, which will ultimately lead to good grades and a brighter future for the pupils.
A brighter future
The dedication prayer marked an important milestone in the academic journey of the P7 pupils. As they look to the future, officials and parents are urging them to stay focused and take advantage of the opportunities available to them. With the support of the government and their community, the pupils of Wigweng Primary School are poised to achieve great things.
