Hailstorm Destroys Crops in Oyam District

Farmers in Oyam District are counting losses following a heavy rain downpour accompanied by hailstorm which destroyed several gardens of crops. The affected farmers are in Juma Parish, Kamdini sub-county, where a heavy downpour and hailstorm which hit the area on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, destroyed crops in six villages. Carolyn Akot, a tomato farmer in Onea A village, said that the hailstorm destroyed her four acres of tomatoes, which she invested millions of shillings.

I had tomatoes in three stages, I was expecting money in the next two weeks to come out of it, but rain has spoiled it thoroughly. I am down completely. I now request the government to help me because I have no office and this is my office.’

Meanwhile, Richard Ekuka, the LC One Chairperson of Juma village, said that many households in his village are now staring at hunger as their staple food crops are now totally destroyed.

The hailstorm destroyed so many crops. It also struck a person.

Most of the crops destroyed are cassava, banana, it destroyed all the leaves of the banana, including tomatoes which were planted around wetland.’

Solomon Onapa, the LC One chairperson of Bombei village, is calling for government intervention to save the people from hunger which is just around the corner.

We had cassava in the garden which was destroyed, including bananas, even young trees which were planted also destroyed.

This rain returned aggressively.

The affected farmers are now requesting for support from the government, like food, to make life easy for them because they are likely to suffer.
