Bukoola Chemical Industries Limited has embarked on a campaign to sensitise farmers in Kyegegwa District on the effective use of organic chemicals to improve the quality of agricultural produce.
According to agricultural experts, many subsistence farmers misuse fertilisers, which not only reduces crop yields but also exposes them to health risks due to what has been described as “improper handling” during application in the garden.
This concern was raised during a sensitisation meeting held on Friday, 4 July, at Kazinga Church of Uganda Parish in Kazinga Town Council. The event attracted farmers from the villages of Ekyerisho, Kinombe, and Rushayumbe in Rushayumbe Ward.
Jim Mugumya, an expert from Bukoola Chemical Industries Limited — a company renowned for producing a wide range of organic farming chemicals — stressed the importance of proper fertiliser use in boosting yields across various crops, including onions, groundnuts, beans, tomatoes, watermelons, peas, coffee, millet, and maize.
“Fertilisers play a vital role in improving agricultural production when used according to expert guidance. However, if applied incorrectly, they can degrade the soil,” said Mugumya.
He further urged farmers to be selective when choosing seeds, emphasising the importance of using quality, disease-resistant varieties to prevent the spread of harmful viruses in their gardens.
Farmers, led by Faustina Byamugisha — a vanilla and cocoa grower from Rushayumbe Village in Rushayumbe Ward, Kazinga Town Council, Kyegegwa District — admitted that many of them had previously neglected to wear protective gear while working in their gardens. They praised Bukoola Chemical Industries Limited for the training, saying it has positively changed their mindset.
Amos Kijunjure, the owner of an agro-shop in Kazinga Town Council who organised the training, thanked residents for responding to the call for sensitisation. He added that he is planning to organise another session in other areas soon.
