More than 100 selected coffee model farmers in Kyegegwa district have a reason to smile after receiving organic fertiliser aimed at boosting coffee production in the area.
The distribution exercise took place on Wednesday, November 5, at the Kyegegwa District Production Office. According to Teopista Kahunde, the Senior Agricultural Officer, the 450 bags of Fertiplus organic fertiliser (each weighing 25 kilograms) were allocated to the district by the Coffee Department under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF).
Before the handover, Ms. Kahunde conducted a practical demonstration on how to properly apply the fertiliser. The training session was held at the coffee plantation of an elderly woman identified as Kabakari, a resident of Rwamijo cell in Kyegegwa town council.

While addressing the farmers, John Kisoke Byamukama, the Kyegegwa District Chairperson, urged beneficiaries to plant coffee they can manage and care for adequately if they are to achieve better yields. He also encouraged them to embrace cocoa growing as an additional enterprise for sustainable household income.

Meanwhile, Mwesige Peter, an Agricultural Officer under the Coffee Department at MAAIF and in charge of Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa, and Kagadi districts emphasised the importance of maintaining coffee quality. He warned farmers against selling the distributed fertiliser, stressing that it is intended solely to improve productivity.
Some of the delighted beneficiaries who spoke to our reporter applauded the government and the Kyegegwa District Production Department for the support, expressing optimism that the intervention will significantly increase coffee yields in the district.
