Security guard arrested in Rukiga for fatally shooting herdsman

According to police reports, the deceased and his colleague, identified as Alias Owamahoro, were herding cattle belonging to Mbabazi Kakwerere, the Rukiga District Chairperson. While on duty, the suspect—who is attached to the Rukiga SACCO Kamwezi Branch—passed by the farm armed with a firearm and accompanied by an unidentified woman.

Police in Rukiga district have arrested Silas Musinguzi, a 21-year-old security guard attached to Safe Tech Security Company, in connection with the fatal shooting of Kendrick Nabimanya, a 22-year-old herdsman and resident of Kigara B cell, Kigara parish, Kamwezi sub county, Rukiga district.

The incident occurred over the weekend, on the night of 5 April 2025, at around 9:30 p.m. along the Muhanga–Kamwezi road in Rukiga District.

According to police reports, the deceased and his colleague, identified as Alias Owamahoro, were herding cattle belonging to Mbabazi Kakwerere, the Rukiga District Chairperson. While on duty, the suspect—who is also attached to Rukiga SACCO Kamwezi Branch—passed by the farm armed with a firearm and accompanied by an unidentified woman.

According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, it is alleged that the deceased followed the pair, reportedly out of curiosity to identify the woman. The suspect, feeling provoked by the action, turned back and shot Kendrick, killing him on the spot.

Maate stated that witness statements were recorded, and the body was taken to Kamwezi Health Centre IV for a post-mortem examination.

The suspect was arrested, and the firearm used in the incident was recovered and is awaiting forensic analysis.

Investigations are ongoing, and upon conclusion, the suspect will be arraigned in court to face the appropriate charges.
