Residents of Kabale municipality are living in fear following the theft of a firearm from a security guard at Pearl Hotel in Kigongi cell, Central ward, Central division.
According to a statement released by Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 10, 2025, at around 4:00 AM. The stolen weapon was an SAR rifle, serial number 564210028-15120, loaded with two rounds of ammunition.
The firearm was stolen from 23-year-old Osbert Byonanebye, a security guard attached to Ruhama Veterans Security Services.
Maate revealed that the guard was allegedly found asleep while on duty, which allowed the unidentified suspect to snatch the rifle and flee in the direction of Rushaki.
Byonanebye reportedly attempted to chase the suspect but failed to apprehend them.
Police have launched a manhunt and are appealing to the public to remain calm, security-conscious, and vigilant.
