Police in Ibanda district have launched investigations into the brutal killing of a police constable by a mob during a funeral gathering.
The deceased, identified as Police Constable Suleiman Chemonges, service number 75290, aged 28, was attached to Bisheshe Police Station in Ibanda district. He was reportedly murdered on 6 April 2025 while on duty.
According to Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, Chemonges had been deployed to provide security at the burial of Lazarus Kahangire, an inmate who recently died at Nyabuhikye Government Prison.
Kahangire had been on remand in connection with a case of attempted murder under reference IBD CRB 849/2023—a dispute arising from a land conflict involving Vincent Mbabazi and his brothers.
Kasasira explained that Chemonges arrived at the funeral ahead of his colleagues but was suddenly attacked by a mob, allegedly composed of Kahangire’s relatives. The attackers accused the police of being responsible for Kahangire’s death while in prison custody.
Chemonges succumbed to the assault at the scene. His body was transported to the Ruhoko Health Centre IV mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination, as investigations continue.
Police have condemned the act and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
