Security team of Lira city have recovered over one million shillings from Akwia-woro Parish Development Model (PDM) Sacco leaders in Lira city east.
On 21st July 2024, security authorities headed by the Resident City Commissioner of Lira, Lawrence Egole, ordered for the arrest of some of the Akwia-woro Sacco leaders over alleged extortion of money from PDM sacco members.
The suspects were accused of collecting 55,000/= from each member with connivance with Mr. Oula Tobby, the chairperson of Nen Anyim group. After their arrest, a total of 1,294,000/= was recovered.
Yesterday, the suspects were made to refund the money to their owners in the presence of a section of leaders from Lira city east division.
The area councilor for Akwia-woro ward, Lawrence Angoi while officiating over the exercise at Akwia-woro trading centre, warned – residents to desist from issuing money to the PDM Sacco leaders saying the process is free of charge as per the guidelines adding that anybody who will fall a victim will face the wrath of the law.
The acting chairperson of Akwia-woro PDM Sacco, Arac Susan Otim, lauded their leaders for their efforts in ensuring the locals are not cheated by untrusted leaders.
Members of the Sacco group whose monies were refunded applauded their leaders for collaborating with Lira city security team and finally they are okay.
