The government proposal to abolish Primary Leaving Examination-PLE in primary schools has drawn mixed reactions among stakeholders in Lango.
According to the proposed policy, home work for learners, termly assessment and Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) will be phased and replaced with continuous assessment.
In his Opinion, Mr. Franco Olaboro the Alebtong district Chief Administrative Officers stated that a thorough research needs to be conducted before initiating such policies saying after implementation, a policy review needs to be put in place in case of challenges.
The Apac district Education Officer (DEO), Mr. Bosco Elyak acknowledged the ongoing discussions on the adjustment or changes over primary education curriculum asserting that the new guidelines are part of the adjustment.
The DEO is optimistic that the policy will impact the education system noting that Uganda is the only country which still practices the traditional British curriculum.
Meanwhile Mr. Thomas Otema, the retired Head teacher and the director of St Thomas day and boarding primary school highlighted that homework serves as a reminder, keep children busy, and maintain discipline which should not be phased out.
He also stated that contentious assessment is important however, the end of term examinations must be in place to determine the ability of the learner.
