Environmental experts have raised concerns over the threats posed by environmental degradation caused by human activities.
The Acting Environment Officer of Lira District Local Government, Walter Ocen, expressed the concern yesterday evening in an exclusive interview with Radio Wa FM, following recent adverse climatic changes.
Ocen explained that, despite it being the dry season, current temperatures have risen to 30 degrees Celsius, exceeding the recommended body comfort level of 27 degrees Celsius. He attributed the rise to human activities such as wetland degradation, deforestation, and the burning of fossil fuels, among others.
He warned that if this trend continues, it will have severe consequences for the environment and its surrounding areas.
Ocen urged the people of Lango to desist from activities that negatively impact the environment, noting that in the past, the dry season was short. However, due to environmental degradation, it has become prolonged and accompanied by unbearable temperatures.
He also urged residents to minimise exposure to the sun during peak hours, particularly between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., to reduce the risk of sun-related illnesses such as skin cancer, especially among women and children.
Ocen strongly called for environmental conservation through tree planting, wetland preservation, and the proper disposal of plastic materials, among other measures.
