Alebtong is one of the districts selected to benefit from Uganda climate smart Agricultural transformation project funded by the World Bank.
Speaking last evening during a media engagement in Lira city, Edward Okullu,the district project focal point person articulated that the project is being implemented in 69 districts in the country including Alebtong.
Okullu said the project which is set to benefit over 100 farmer groups, is geared towards 4 pillars; value chains which entails ;mango and orange growing, Livestock -cattle beef production and beneficial value chain.
Okullu also noted that, the project requires that farmer are in registered groups in order for them to benefit.
Dr.Charles Noki,the Alebtong district production officer confirmed that they have sensitized and mobilized the farmers of various categories for the project.
Dr Noki further stated that in addition to being in groups,the farmers are required to contribute 20 percent of the money to enable them access the services while the government will contribute the remaining 80 percent.
He also said,they have traversed all the sub counties benefiting from the projects but expressed that most of the farmers are afraid of picking the 20 percent required of them inorder to benefit from the initiative.He urged farmers to have a positive mindset towards the project saying it will inturn improve their livelihood.
In his part,Franco Olaboro,the Chief Administrative Officer-CAO for Alebtong rallied the farmers to embrace the Climate smart Agriculture transformation project by contributing the 20 percent required of them.He also reiterated that they have fully sensitized and guided the farmers on how to participate and benefit from the value chains.Olaboro said Alebtong district will majorly focus on Mango,citrus and soybeans saying research indicates that the crops grow very well in the area.
Meanwhile,Geoffrey Okiswa,the Residence District Commissioner for Alebtong echoed that the government has put in place many poverty eradication programs like the Parish Development Model-PDM,emyooga and GROW program, emphasizing the need for a positive attitude since the project has already been rolled out with capacity building and training to ensure is successful.
Okiswa said the country is in right move to ensure its members are empowered with money in their economy by engaging in various government poverty alleviation programs.
The project which is under the ministry of Agriculture Animal industry and fisheries will take a period of 6 years.
