Since yesterday evening, supporters of various contenders have been awaiting the final results from the tallying centre, which is still ongoing at Rwenzori International Hotel in Kasese Municipality.
Hon. Dr Crispus Kiyonga, Chancellor of Makerere University, is the NRM flag bearer for Bukonzo County West in the forthcoming general elections after defeating Hon. Godfrey Kabyanga, the State Minister for ICT and National Guidance, by 9,747 votes.
According to the NRM registrar, Mr Amon Mbusa, Dr Kiyonga secured 19,965 votes compared to his closest rival, Hon. Kabyanga, who received 10,218 votes.
Mr Milton Wangalima, another contender for the same seat, obtained 430 votes.
In a related development, Hon. Ferigo Kambale has been officially declared the National Resistance Movement flag bearer for Kasese Municipality Member of Parliament in the upcoming general elections scheduled for January next year.
Hon. Kambale was declared winner at around 2 a.m., having garnered 7,651 votes, compared to his closest challenger, Mr Francis Kithulha, who received 6,247 votes; followed by Yofesi Saturday Madaraka with 1,162 votes, then Mr Leonard Imanishimwe and Ms Diana Nasuna Ssempebwa, according to Mr Amon Mbusa, the Kasese district NRM registrar.
According to Mbusa, Nyakasanga Upper polling station in Kasese Municipality did not exist in Nyamwamba Division, so Mr Kithulha’s reported 559 votes there—compared to 60 for Hon. Ferigo—were erroneous and illegal.
Three other polling stations that awarded Mr Kithulha more than 1,000 votes were also cancelled due to alleged irregularities and dubious results, which may prompt the Kasese registry to petition the national party leadership for guidance.
Shortly after the declaration, Mr Douglas Saturday Madaraka conceded defeat and pledged his support to Mr Ferigo, the party flag bearer for the general elections.
He thanked his supporters for remaining peaceful throughout the party’s political campaigns.
