The disgruntled land claimants who had camped at the RDC’s office for nearly three months have peacefully disbanded their camp as the government works towards finding a lasting solution to their grievances.
In May this year, land claimants from disputed pieces of land in Nkoko, Ibuga, and Kisanga villages in Kitswamba, Kabukero in Karusandara Sub-county, as well as Rwehingo village in Nyakiyumbu Sub-county, all in Kasese District, camped at the RDC’s office demanding urgent government intervention in their claims.
Addressing the media as claimants exited the Kasese Municipal Mayor’s Gardens this morning, Lt Joe Walunsimbi, the Kasese Resident District Commissioner, announced that due to legal requirements concerning the titling of land in Nkoko and Kabukero areas, the State Minister for Lands, Dr Sam Mayanja, would not be returning to Kasese tomorrow as earlier planned.
Lt Walunsimbi further explained that Dr Mayanja’s letter prompted him to convene a consultative meeting with the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu, the Inter-Religious Council in Kasese, and the claimants’ representatives. The meeting resulted in the dissolution of the camp as more information is incorporated into the ongoing land titling process.
Lt Walunsimbi later described it as shameful that some politicians, instead of consulting the Ministry of Lands on the matter, chose to visit the temporary camp for what he termed “karaoke,” misleading the land claimants.
Speaking to some of the land victims, they claimed they were forced to leave the camp due to a lack of essential needs, including food, water, and medication.
