Former Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) fighter Thomas Kwoyelo has told the court that most top commanders of the rebel group are soldiers of former President Tito Okello whom President Yoweri Museveni ousted.

Kwoyelo told the court on Wednesday during his testimony that the former soldiers of Tito Okello who fled Museveni’s regime were in charge of training abductees and planning attacks.

He also explained that the rebel commanders were in charge of planning attacks and abductions and would tell them that Joseph Kony was a civilian who offered spiritual guidance.

Kwoyelo also told the court that the LRA purposely abducted children due to their short memories and would not think of escaping or recalling directions for returning home.

Kwoyelo is defending himself before the International Crimes Division (ICD) of the High Court against 78 charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the civilian population of northern Uganda.

The court has been adjourned to Thursday. It is being held at Gulu High Court in Gulu City.

The presiding judges included Andrew Bashaija, Stephen Mubiru, Michael Elubu, and Duncan Gaswaga.
