Victim of electral violence

Police in Luuka have arrested D/C Emojong Denis to assist in investigations into the suspected murder by shooting of a 30-year-old man, identified as Lwayanga Swaliki, as well as the injuries sustained by two others during the National Resistance Movement (NRM) grassroots elections.

The injured victims have been identified as Oketch Ivan, a resident of Bulanga central, and Nabugo Peterson, a resident of Wainha village, Baitambogwe sub county in Mayuge district.

The incident occurred at the Noor Islamic Primary Teachers’ College playground in Luswiga zone, Nantamu ward, Bulanga town council, Luuka district.

Initial findings suggest that elections scheduled for Tuesday, 06/05/2025, at the location were cancelled due to unrest, prompting party leaders to reschedule the election for today.

The exercise initially began peacefully, but it is alleged that one of the candidates mobilised youth from outside the area for unknown reasons. Chaos erupted during the vote-counting process when a group of unruly young men surrounded the returning officer, demanding the premature declaration of Isebo Sulaimani as the winner.

Amid the scuffle, police officers led by the area OC attempted to restore order, but their efforts proved unsuccessful. The angry youths began pelting stones, endangering the safety of police officers and electoral officials. In response to the escalating violence, police officers discharged firearms, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. The deceased was transported to Iganga General Hospital mortuary, while the injured are currently receiving medical treatment.

During the transportation of the body, Sgt Khaleke Noah, attached to Luuka CPS, was injured in the eye by a stone thrown by the mob. He has been referred to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for further treatment.

We urge the public to remain calm as investigations continue and to uphold peace throughout the ongoing electoral process. Police have stated they will take legal action against any individual or group found responsible for actions that undermine the legal procedures governing the election.
