The government, through the Uganda Development Bank, has supported farmers in Buyende district with a tractor and a cash donation of 150 million Ugandan shillings.
While addressing farmers’ groups at Buyende Township Primary School in Buyende town council, Hon. Nakato Mary, the Woman Member of Parliament, appealed to the groups to use the tractor responsibly so it can serve them for a long time. She also urged them to be trustworthy in order to attract further support.
The Uganda Development Bank began disbursing these funds to help farmers, particularly those working in groups, to mechanise agriculture, increase large-scale production, and improve their household incomes.
She also appealed to the community to promote agricultural mechanisation and to prioritise the cultivation of cocoa alongside food crops.
Nakato, who is seeking re-election, highlighted her achievements during her current term in Parliament, emphasising that health and agriculture have been her top priorities, with agriculture being the backbone of Africa.
This is the second tractor brought to the district through her efforts, following the provision of functional tractors on Women’s Day last year.
The chairperson of one of the groups, Farmers’ Link for Food and Production, Mrs Hope Kyomuhendo, commended the government for its support in boosting agriculture and pledged that the group would work hard to make the most of the assistance.
The groups number over 30 and comprise a total of 300 members. Buyende district is one of the districts that relies purely on agriculture and borders the shores of Lake Kyoga. The main crops grown in the area include cassava, groundnuts, and maize.
