The Equal Opportunities Commission has conducted an induction for political and technical leaders in Buyende District to promote inclusive governance, balanced budgeting, and equitable service delivery.
Speaking during the induction, Buyende District Chairperson Mr. Sharif Mangareine said the training was intended to change the mindset of leaders who remain silent instead of advocating for the needs of their communities. He urged councillors to fulfil the promises they made during their campaigns by actively representing the interests of the people.
“I wrote to the Commission requesting them to come and induct the councillors and create awareness about their roles and responsibilities,” Mr. Mangareine said. He expressed satisfaction with the training, noting that it had equipped leaders with valuable knowledge to improve service delivery.
Speaking to our reporter, the Secretary for Social Services and Workers’ Representative in the district council, Hon. Jackline Namukoma, called for more induction sessions, noting that the government had not yet conducted its own orientation for the newly elected leaders.
Hon. Namukoma said the training was informative and appealed to the district’s budget committee to always consider the needs of women, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups during planning and budgeting, emphasising that they play an important role in the district’s development.
She also encouraged fellow councillors to take the lessons from the induction seriously and apply them in serving their communities.

Buyende District Council comprises 36 councillors representing the district’s 14 subcounties. Each subcounty is represented by one male and one female councillor, in addition to representatives for the youth, older persons, and persons with disabilities. All councillors attended the induction.
Buyende District is the northernmost district in the Busoga subregion. It borders Serere District across Lake Kyoga and Kayunga District across the River Nile.
