The Minister for East African Community Affairs and First Deputy Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, urged communities, especially women to take the lead in planting trees, regardless of the type.

While addressing a number of women during the belated Women’s Day celebration held at Bulopa Senior Secondary School, Kadaga said that women are now “God’s chosen” in decision-making and should use that opportunity to take the lead in restoring the environment and addressing climate change.

She emphasised that this effort should not only focus on planting trees but also on keeping the environment clean, starting from home. She added that modern or smart farming methods can help restore the environment. For example, even those with small pieces of land can utilise them effectively without destroying trees and other green cover.

Kadaga noted that human activities, especially farming, are among the major causes of climate change. However, she urged the community to remain vigilant and adopt environmentally friendly agricultural practices.

The Rt. Hon. Kadaga also commended non-governmental organisations for their efforts in promoting environmental protection and encouraged them to provide sustainable, long-term solutions to communities. She further pledged to work with the Ministry of Agriculture to lobby for free seedlings to be distributed to communities.

At the same event, the Kamuli District Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Maale Lawrence, said the district is ready to work with the community to promote tree planting activities, noting that it is one of the best ways to achieve environmental protection.
