Schools in Kamuli District are actively engaging in tree planting within their compounds as part of key activities outlined in the patriotism program.
At the beginning of every year, Senior One students undergo patriotism training, a government directive that all schools are required to follow. This initiative was observed at Kamuli Progressive College.
The headteacher, Charles Ngobi, who also serves as the District Coordinator for Patriotism in Kamuli District, explained that in addition to teaching self-defense and promoting love for the country and one another, the program also emphasises environmental conservation. Students are encouraged to plant trees not only at school but also at home.
Leading by example, Kamuli Progressive College has planted trees both within and outside the school premises. These trees provide shade for students and staff, help protect the ecosystem, and contribute to rainfall formation.
Mr. Ngobi also noted that they are disseminating this information to parents and guardians so they can adopt similar practices and help protect the environment. The school not only promotes tree planting but also sensitises the community on maintaining clean compounds and avoiding littering.

With a student population of over 3,000, the school has encouraged parents to plant at least five trees each, following the patriotism orientation of new entrants. This means that every year, tree planting efforts are extended into the surrounding communities.

The Kamuli Resident District Commissioner, Mrs. Rose Birungi, has consistently mobilised people to participate in patriotism activities. As a result, many have embraced the initiative, and positive outcomes are already being realised.
Starting next week, many schools will be passing out patriotism students, with climate and environmental management being among the key focus areas.
