One killed, 15 injured in Bugweri road crash

One person was killed and 15 others injured in a road traffic accident involving a school bus and a stationary trailer in Bugweri District.

The crash occurred at about 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday in Nawangisa Village along the Mbale–Iganga Highway.

According to Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha, the accident involved an Isuzu bus, registration number UA551ED, owned by Amuria High School, and a Mercedes Benz Actros trailer, registration number UBB269V.

The bus was transporting 73 students from St. Paul Secondary School in Katakwi District to Kasenyi Landing Site in Entebbe for a geography study tour when it rammed into the rear of a stationary trailer.

The bus driver, Kasakya Abdallah, 68, died instantly at the scene.

The injured include 13 students, one teacher identified as Oluga George, and the bus conductor, whose identity had not yet been established by the time of filing this report.

The injured students have been identified as Iraat Joseph (Senior Three), Obweikal Emmanuel (Senior Three), Opio Samuel Martin (Senior Four), Ingirot John Martin (Senior Four), Emodit Simon (Senior Three), Aanyu Samuel (Senior Three), Oumo Jeremiah (Senior Four), Okurut Silver (Senior Three), Alibet Isaac (Senior Four), Oila Samuel (Senior Three), Okot Timothy (Senior Three), Ocen John Mark (Senior Three), and Nyasurura Perez (Senior Four).

ASP Kasadha said traffic officers led by the Regional Traffic Officer visited and documented the scene before towing the vehicles.

The body of the deceased was taken to Iganga Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination, while the injured victims were rushed to Iganga General Hospital for treatment.

The two vehicles have been impounded at Busembatya Police Station pending inspection as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

Police have urged all road users to exercise caution and observe traffic safety measures to prevent similar accidents.
