The Ugandan non-governmental organisation Water Aid, operating in Kamuli and Buyende districts, has demonstrated its impact on the ground, as witnessed by the media and district officials. The organisation has promoted sanitation and distributed clean water to institutions such as schools and health centres.

While handing over multi-million-shilling modern facilities to the Balawoli community in Balawoli Town Council, Kamuli District, the Country Director for Water Aid, Mrs Joice Mpalanye Magala, expressed her satisfaction at the completion of the programme, saying it reflected their goal of reaching out to communities. She explained that the project includes support for young children, which is why a boys’ latrine was constructed.

Other developments include the construction of a modern placenta pit at Balawoli Health Centre III and the distribution of water through three 3,000-litre tanks. She urged the community and district authorities to ensure the installation of reliable electricity to enhance the flow of water, noting that it is more powerful than solar-powered systems.

Speaking in an interview, Mrs Joice Mpalanye Magala said that Water Aid is ready to continue supporting the community in promoting hygiene and sanitation.

The Kamuli District Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Mr Mafumo Adonia, commended Water Aid for the work carried out and pledged support for such organisations, noting the positive impact they have on the community. He also urged the community to use the project responsibly and take ownership, as they are the primary beneficiaries.

The water will now serve the community by improving sanitation and hygiene, providing significant benefits, as many communities in Kamuli still lack access to clean water. In the town councils, piped water is needed more than reliance on boreholes.
