In a groundbreaking initiative, Mbale Main Regional Referral Hospital in Eastern Uganda has introduced psychosocial support groups for mothers of prematurely born children.

This initiative by “born on the edge,” led by Dr Kathy Burgoine and implemented by a team headed by Dr Martha Muduwa, a research medical officer at the hospital, aims to provide crucial emotional support and guidance to mothers navigating the challenges of neonatal care.

Mothers with babies in the neonatal ward share a light moment during a weekly group meeting.

Premature birth, a significant public health concern in Uganda, has long been surrounded by misconceptions and misinformation. In the past, many premature infants were left to die due to inadequate medical care and societal stigma. However, with the launch of these support groups, mothers are now embracing neonatal medical care, and a sense of community and hope is emerging.

The weekly meetings, held every Tuesday, bring together mothers with babies in the neonatal ward, providing a safe space for sharing experiences, encouragement, and empowerment. Dr Muduwa notes that former pre-term mothers are now actively involved in supporting current participants, sharing their stories and offering valuable insights.

While the programme has shown remarkable success, it relies solely on individual sponsorships, with each meeting costing Shs 50,000. In a heartwarming gesture, Apollo B W, an artist who uses his influence to give back to his community, recently donated an envelope to the cause, emphasising the need for increased financial support to sustain and expand the initiative.

As the programme continues to grow, its impact extends beyond the hospital walls, fostering a community of resilient mothers who feel loved, supported, and empowered to help others. With additional funding and support, this model can be replicated nationwide, transforming the lives of countless mothers and their premature babies.
