A couple in Lira City narrowly escaped being burnt alive inside their house by a suspected arsonist who is now on the run.

The Police in Lira City West Division and community members at Blue Corner North, Blue Corner ward are already hunting for the suspect identified as Okello Apap who is accused of the act.

He allegedly set the fire after pouring petrol at the doorstep where the couple identified as Winnie Agora and Kali Nicholas Ogwal were sleeping.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Region Police spokesperson said the incident happened at around 4 AM on Sunday.

He said the Divisional OC CID and his team booked out to the scene after receiving a phone call from a concerned citizen about a house burning, notified the fire brigade and rescue services from North Kyoga that proceeded immediately to the scene and managed the fire and later evacuated the victims for treatment at Lira Regional Referral hospital.

The motive of the suspect is still not very clear though the Police say some information indicates that the suspect had a long misunderstanding with one of the victims; Winnie Agora whom the suspect claimed was spoiling his wife. The matter had not reached the attention of the area LC1 or police for advice or investigation.

Okema says police still investigating the motive of the arson

Okema said this is such a heartbreaking incident and as police, they appeal to individuals to always find the best way of resolving matters.

Okema calls for calmness from relatives of the victims, and members of the public and pledges to apprehend the suspect and charge him in court for attempted murder and arson.
