Residents of Latigi village, Latigi parish, Porogali subcounty, are dissatisfied with the handling of funds meant for the repair and maintenance of the ‘Can Deg Nyap’ borehole, which broke down two years ago.

It is alleged that the water user committee has been collecting 25,000 UGX from each of the 65 households since the borehole broke down. However, the residents claim the money remains unaccounted for, and no repairs have been made.

Akena Charles, a member of the water user committee, confirmed the collection of the 25,000 UGX per household, stating that the money was used to purchase around eight pipes for the borehole’s rehabilitation. However, he admitted that it remains unclear whether the entire amount was spent on the pipes.

Okot Fred Okane, the LC1 Vice Chairperson of Latigi village, revealed that residents must walk approximately one mile in search of clean water. He added that due to the long distances, some locals have resorted to using contaminated water, and private drug shop owners who provided healthcare services have since left the village.

Ojok Simon Peter, the LC2 Chairperson of Latigi parish, expressed frustration over the lack of feedback regarding the borehole’s repair, despite multiple notifications being submitted to higher authorities.

However, Odongkara David, the LC3 Chairperson of Porogali subcounty, stated that he had not been notified about the issue.

Odongkara has now ordered the water user committee to provide full transparency and proper accountability for the funds collected or risk facing legal action.
