Koyo parish in Lapul sub county, Pader district, has announced plans by the chiefdom to register its members in every household.
This was revealed during the visit of Rwot David Onen Acana II to Koyo Chiefdom as part of his tour of East Acholi, which began in Agago district and covered Kitgum, Lamwo, and Pader districts, with the final stop being Koyo clan.
Samuel Odora, the Prime Minister of Koyo Chiefdom, spoke during the engagement with the Paramount Chief of Acholi at the Koyo Palace. He confirmed that the registration of their members would begin soon.
Odora explained that the Koyo clan, as part of Acholi, has its members spread across eight districts, but they are currently unaware of the total number.
Odora, who set a one-month timeline for the exercise to yield results, added that they have a strong leadership structure across the various districts, which would ensure the smooth completion of this task.
Odora, who also reported that the chiefdom has established a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) for the clan, explained that the initiative, called the Clan Tax, is designed to help members borrow from the pool to finance their various activities, rather than relying on lengthy processes at other financial institutions.
Rwot David Onen Acana II, the Paramount Chief of Acholi, responded to some of the achievements, stating that it is a positive development by the clan leaders to introduce such an initiative. However, he cautioned against corruption and stressed the importance of proper management of the funds.
Acana, while encouraging the clan leaders, also advised them to maintain accurate records for those borrowing, ensuring that there is a clear and transparent record by the time the loan is repaid.
