The Chief Magistrate of Pader District, Martins Kirya, has encouraged communities to embrace alternative justice systems and customary laws in resolving conflicts, saying such approaches help restore harmony and strengthen relationships within society.
Speaking to our reporter from his office today morning, Kirya said traditional justice systems focus more on reconciliation and solving the root causes of disputes rather than only punishing offenders through formal court processes.
According to Kirya, many conflicts within communities can be resolved peacefully through dialogue, mediation, and involvement of clan and community leaders who understand the background of the disagreements.
He noted that customary justice systems help communities remain united because they allow both parties to participate in finding solutions acceptable to everyone involved.
Kirya explained that unlike formal court systems, traditional approaches often emphasize forgiveness, compensation, and reconciliation, which help communities continue living together peacefully after disputes are settled.
He added that in many rural settings, alternative justice mechanisms are more accessible and affordable for ordinary citizens compared to formal court proceedings.
The Chief Magistrate however clarified that not all cases can be handled through customary justice systems, especially serious criminal offences which must remain under the formal court system.
He said courts still maintain the responsibility of ensuring justice is served and protecting the rights of all individuals, even as communities continue to use traditional methods where appropriate.
Kirya further emphasized the need for communities to work together in promoting peace, discipline, and responsible behavior among members of society to reduce cases of conflict and crime.
