Kworo High School has reaffirmed its dominance in school sports after an outstanding performance at the Pader District Secondary Schools Sports Association Games held at Pajule Playgrounds in Pader District.

The school excelled in several track and field events, winning the girls’ athletics championship with 165 points and also lifting the Ludo games trophy. The achievement further strengthens Kworo High School’s reputation as one of the district’s leading athletics institutions.

Speaking during the award ceremony, Pader District Education Officer Margaret Alanyo congratulated the learners for their consistent performance and for raising the district’s profile through sports. She urged schools to broaden participation beyond athletics, noting that while secondary schools are expected to compete in up to 24 sports disciplines under the Ministry of Education and Sports programme, only a few disciplines were represented at the district games.

Alanyo also warned head teachers against fielding non-students in competitions, saying such practices could result in disqualification and affect schools’ participation at higher levels.

She emphasized the importance of inclusive sports participation, noting that not all learners will proceed with academics, and some may develop careers in sports and other creative fields

Pader District Sports Officer Alfred Okello Azim commended the 13 schools that took part in the competition and praised head teachers and technical teams for supporting sports development. However, he said the district would investigate the absence of some schools, emphasizing that participation in official education programmes is a government requirement.

Azim also highlighted technical weaknesses observed during the games, particularly in relay baton exchanges, and encouraged sports teachers to strengthen their skills across multiple disciplines in preparation for district, regional, and national competitions, including upcoming events in Gulu City. He further stressed the importance of discipline, proper sports uniforms, and safety equipment for athletes.

Pader District Vice Chairperson Patrick Okello applauded both teachers and learners for their performance and participation in school sports activities. He called for continued commitment among educators and stronger collaboration between political leaders and education stakeholders to improve service delivery in schools, noting that a stronger education system is key to reducing poverty and improving livelihoods.

Kworo High School Athletics Captain Esther Abwol Layet attributed the school’s success to disciplined training, dedicated coaching, and strong support from the school administration. The Senior Four student said the provision of sports equipment and adherence to discipline played a major role in the team’s achievements.

In the girls’ category, Kworo High School topped the standings with 165 points, followed by Archbishop Flynn Secondary School with 123 points. Pajule College scored six points, while Pader Town Secondary School registered no points.

In the overall rankings, Atanga Secondary School emerged champions with 284 points, ahead of Archbishop Flynn Secondary School with 220 points. Pajule College and Pader Town Secondary School finished 13th and 12th respectively, with seven and ten points.

The games also served as a selection event for athletes who will represent Pader District at the forthcoming regional championships in Gulu City.
