Eight parish chiefs arrested for extortion in Agago district may lose their jobs if found guilty.

The chiefs, arrested for allegedly listing only names of their immediate relatives to benefit from the government restocking program, will be put in jail and replaced if convicted.

Resident District Commissioner for Agago, James Nabinson Kidega, confirmed this to journalists during a press conference at Agago District Headquarters.

RDC Kidega said those arrested will appear in the box on not later than Wednesday at the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Patongo because he has already spoken to the State Attorney.

On district service delivery, Kidega said his office had been focusing only on security while monitoring of government programs was weak.

According to Kidega, this will not continue. He warned: “Small fish have started coming out. The bigger ones will follow.”

However, a source privay to the case and close to Patongo high court said the suspect will be arraigned in court on Wednesday, not Tuesday as earlier mentioned by the RDC because Tuesday 9th is a public holiday.

Agago district was recently ranked among the poorest performing districts at number 168 in Uganda, according to the Local Government Performance Assessment. Kidega said this is shameful for the current regime and they are fighting to ensure it is not repeated.
