The Chief Magistrate of Agago District, Ms Ajok Betty, has called on newly sworn-in political leaders to take their oaths of office seriously, emphasising that the pledges signify their loyalty to God, the country, and the offices they hold.

Her Worship (HW) made the remarks while presiding over the swearing-in ceremony of district councillors in Otuke District on 20 May 2026 at the district headquarters.

Before administering the oaths, she reminded the councillors that taking the oath is a mandatory legal requirement for all elected and appointed leaders before they assume office. She explained that the oath serves as a symbol of legitimacy, providing leaders with an opportunity to publicly declare their commitment to serving God, the nation, and their respective offices.

The Chief Magistrate further noted that the oath should keep leaders mindful of their accountability, not only to the people they serve but also to God, whom she described as a supreme authority above personal interests. She added that the oath is intended to unite leaders around the common goal of serving their communities effectively and impartially.

During the same event, Her Worship also oversaw the election of the district speaker. Three candidates contested for the position: Mr Opio Omara Jasper, Ms Apio Betty Opio, and Mr Ogal Patrick.

Following the vote, Mr Opio Omara Jasper secured 52 per cent of the votes cast and was declared the duly elected Speaker of Otuke District for the 2026–2031 term.

The Chief Magistrate’s message comes at a time when newly elected leaders at all levels, including Local Council I (LCI) chairpersons, are striving to deliver community services after assuming public office. She urged them to remain faithful to the commitments made during their swearing-in ceremonies in order to promote accountable leadership, equitable service delivery, and improved development outcomes for their communities.
