Mbale Court remands seven taxi drivers for defying transport order

The drivers who were remanded on Thursday for defying council directives.

The Mbale Municipal Court, commonly known as Ndaula Court, on Thursday evening remanded seven taxi drivers to Maluku Government Prison for 14 days after they appeared before court.

The drivers were charged with violating trade order regulations introduced by Mbale City authorities to streamline operations and restore the lost glory

According to Mugisha Geoffrey Town Clerk Industrial City Division the suspects were arrested on Wednesday March 11 2026 by Mbale City Council enforcement officers while illegally loading passengers along Pallisa Road in an ungazetted area.

Town Clerk of Mbale Industrial City Division Mugisha Geoffrey told the media that several drivers were arrested during the ongoing enforcement exercise aimed at restoring order in the city.

Some of the drivers who were arrested during the operation.

He explained that some of the offenders complied with the regulations and paid a fine of Shs 500,000, while seven drivers who refused to comply were taken to court and remanded to Maluku Prison for 14 days. The suspects are expected to return to court on 26th March 2026.

Mugisha said the city will continue sensitizing the public about the transport guidelines noting that many drivers have already complied and are now operating from the designated taxi parks.

He added that the enforcement exercise will continue indefinitely as authorities work to ensure order, discipline, and cleanliness within Mbale City.
