Authorities in Agago district have issued a stern warning against the growing prevalence of gambling, particularly card games and ludo, which they say have become widespread and detrimental, especially among the youth.
Speaking to Radio Wang Ooh FM, the Agago Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Susan Akot Moro, announced plans to launch a district-wide operation targeting individuals involved in gambling. She noted that most of these activities occur late at night and are contributing to increased incidents of violence and public disorder.
Akot voiced concern over the escalating number of disputes stemming from gambling, many of which are becoming violent. She cited a previous incident in which a disagreement over gambling resulted in a fatal shooting by a member of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). She warned that the government will not tolerate behaviour that endangers lives or threatens peace within the community.
Community members have echoed the RDC’s concerns, calling for the immediate enforcement of the crackdown.
Mzee Encio Okech, a resident of Pakor in Parabongo sub county, stated that gambling is diverting the youth from productive activities such as farming, particularly during the ongoing rainy season. He welcomed the proposed operation and urged the authorities to act swiftly.
At Opota trading centre in Geregere sub county, Charles Onono also expressed support for the initiative. He noted that although completely eradicating the practice may be difficult, strict enforcement is essential to discourage others from engaging in it.
Alfred Okello, the Head Catechist of Patongo Catholic Parish, expressed concern over the growing popularity of gambling among young people. He urged the youth to engage in activities that honour God and enrich their lives, pledging the support of the religious community for efforts to curb gambling in the district.
