Police in Kitgum district are investigating the gruesome murder of an 18-year-old woman, identified as Akwero Mercy, a resident of Adak village, Balakwa parish, Lalano sub county.
According to police reports, the deceased had been staying with her uncle, Okello Paul, at the time of the incident. The tragic event is believed to have stemmed from a domestic disagreement that allegedly began on 2nd May 2025 between Akwero and Atimango Nancy, aged 24, a woman from the same village, reportedly over chairs.
The situation escalated the following day, 3rd May, at around 10:00am, when Akwero Mercy followed Atimango Nancy to a garden to confront her about the previous day’s misunderstanding. A fatal altercation ensued, during which Atimango allegedly attempted to strike Mercy with a hoe. When Mercy dodged the blow, the suspect reportedly drew a knife and stabbed her in the throat, killing her instantly.
Police arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and recovered both the hoe and the knife, which are being held as exhibits in the case. Statements have been recorded from eyewitnesses and members of the community to aid the ongoing investigation.
The body of the deceased was taken to Kitgum General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, Atimango Nancy was arrested shortly after the incident and is currently in police custody, confirmed Inspector of Police Oloya Joe, spokesperson for the Aswa East Police Region.
