Police in Kitgum District have opened investigations into a fatal incident involving a grass-cutting machine that led to the death of a 36-year-old man at Pajimo Army Primary School in Akwang Sub-county.

The deceased has been identified as owiro Nelson, a resident of Akwang Midland Village. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, May 22, is being treated as a case of rush and neglect.

According to police, the Head Teacher of Pajimo Army Primary School had hired a man identified as Abonga to slash the school compound. During the activity, Abonga reportedly told the Head Teacher that the compound was too large for him to manage alone and requested permission to bring in a friend to assist.

The Head Teacher agreed, and Abonga called Owiro Nelson, who arrived with his own mowing machine. Shortly after beginning the work, Owiro reportedly stepped aside to smoke a cigarette, leaving his machine running.

Tragically, when he returned to resume work, the still-operating machine injured him severely. Witnesses say he attempted to run for help but collapsed roughly 50 metres away and died instantly.

Regional police spokesperson for Aswa East Region, IP Oloya Joe, confirmed the incident and revealed that Abonga has been arrested to aid in ongoing investigations.

The body of the deceased was taken to Kitgum General Hospital Mortuary where a post-mortem is expected to be conducted.

The police have advised all institutions and workers using mechanical tools to adhere to safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
