Ten girls in Nwoya district have received scholarship for 4 years to study o’ level starting 2024. The girls who sat for their PLE in 2023 passed in first and second grades and were selected for the scholarhip by Total Energy Uganda.
Christopher Ochowun, the Public Relations and Affairs Co-coordinator Total Energy Uganda said Total Energy in 2013 came with local scholarship focusing on building the capacity of science students in line with government program with skilling Uganda. This project covers the districts of Nwyoya, Buliisa, Masindi, Nebbi and Pakwach. This was because girls were dropping out due to many issues like domestic work, school fees issues among other reasons. He says from 2013 they have empowered 250 girls on merit scholarship who are now having successful future.
Some of the girls Speak fm spoke to shared there excitement.
Aber shillah who completed her primary seven from Koch Goma Central primary school and got 15 aggregates could not hide her happiness about the scholarship.
Apio Esther, one of the girls who received scholarship shared her dream saying she dreams of being a doctor or a lawyer. Apio said she worked hard by reading her books and performed well to be able to get this scholarship. She adds that the scholarship is going to play a big role in making her dream come true.
Aber Queen from Anaka P7 school, who got 14 aggregates says that she is aiming at being an accountant in the future.
However, Oryema Phillip, the District Education Officer Nwoya says the number boys dropping out of school is rising up and appeals for a program to support the boy child as well for an inclusion community development.
In response, Christopher says that they shall have to work together with the Nwoya district local government to work on including boy child in the project.
