Residents of Pader District have been warned against illegal encroachment on wetlands, with local authorities cautioning that violators will face legal consequences.

Martine Okello, the District Forestry Officer, told our reporter on Friday morning that an increasing number of individuals are reclaiming wetlands for farming and settlement — a trend he described as a significant environmental threat.

“We have witnessed continued misuse of wetlands, which puts our natural ecosystems at serious risk,” Okello said. “We have launched a widespread sensitisation campaign to educate the community about the dangers of wetland encroachment and to promote tree planting across the district.”

He emphasised that anyone found violating wetland laws will be prosecuted under existing environmental regulations.

Cathy Janet, the District Environmental Officer, reinforced the warning, urging residents to use wetlands sustainably. “Fishing can provide income, but activities such as farming, brick-making, and building homes in wetlands are strictly prohibited,” she said.

Janet also appealed to the public to take an active role in climate action, particularly by planting trees to replace those that have been extensively felled over the years.

Wetlands in Uganda play a crucial role in regulating water flow, supporting biodiversity, and combating climate change — a message district leaders are now intensifying to protect the environment for future generations.
