PADER, UGANDA — Janet Cathy Aciro, the Pader District Environmental Officer, has urged the community to intensify tree planting efforts to help mitigate the increasing effects of climate change in the region.

Her remarks came on Thursday during the handover of 6,000 eucalyptus seedlings to five farmers’ groups from Pader Town Council. The seedlings were donated by LM International, a non-governmental organisation active in tree planting and environmental conservation in the area.

“Tree planting is the most practical step we can take right now to combat climate change and restore the trees that have been extensively cut down,” Aciro emphasised.

Ronald Okema, Programme Manager at LM International, echoed her call, stating that the widespread deforestation in Northern Uganda can only be reversed through collective and sustained tree planting efforts.

Pader District Forestry Officer, Martine Okello, added that the district has already witnessed progress. “We’ve recorded a 30% reduction in large-scale tree cutting, down from 80% over the past two years,” he noted.

Okello also urged the beneficiary groups to protect the seedlings from threats such as wildfires and animals to ensure their survival and long-term impact.

The three main beneficiary groups of the eucalyptus seedlings include Waneno Anyim Tree Planting Group, Wat Obeno Farmers Group, and Lok Ki Tic Farmers Group — all based in Pader Town Council.
