The Gulu Cancer Institute has officially welcomed a new head, Dr. Geriga Fhadil, appointed by the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala. The handover ceremony took place on Monday, 1 September 2025, at the institute’s premises in Gulu.
Dr. Geriga succeeds Dr. Amos Obote, who took over leadership in July 2022 when the institute had only nine staff members. Over the past two years, Dr. Obote has overseen significant growth and improvements in service delivery at the facility.
During the ceremony, Dr. Amos expressed gratitude for the support provided by the Uganda Cancer Institute, which he said had been crucial to the institute’s success. He also pledged to continue supporting the Gulu branch even after stepping down.
Dr. Geriga thanked the Uganda Cancer Institute for entrusting him with the leadership role and called for the staff’s cooperation to enhance services. He also committed to working closely with his predecessor, Dr. Amos, who remains part of the institute’s team.
Dr. Walusansa Victoria, Assistant Executive Director at the Uganda Cancer Institute headquarters in Kampala, commended Dr. Amos for his dedication. She encouraged Dr. Geriga to build on the foundation he laid and pledged continued support to help the Gulu centre achieve its goals.
